Clifton cinema flats scheme could be rejected

Planners have recommended proposals to convert an old picture house in Bristol into flats should be refused.

Developers want to convert the Whiteladies Road cinema, in Clifton, into nine flats while preserving original features of the building.

Architect Brian Marwood said: "We think we've come up with a balanced approach by retaining the auditorium and creating flats."

The cinema, which was open for 80 years, closed in 2001.

Owners Medinbrand have previously attempted to convert the cinema into a gym which would have been run by LA Fitness.

Nine objections to the application were received by Bristol City Council, including concerns over changes to a Grade II listed structure.

Among the objectors was English Heritage, which said a lack of clear direction of use the use of the auditorium "raised serious concerns as to its future survival".

City planners said the plan to convert the building to flats should not be at the "expense of the existing historic significance".

Councillors are due to make a decision on the scheme on Wednesday.
