A meeting is to be held over a protest camp amid fears it is blocking an air ambulance landing site.

The Occupy Bristol protest has been camped on College Green for a month.

But Liberal Democrat city council leader Barbara Janke said she feared people needing hospital treatment might not be able to get to the city centre.

She said there would have been a "major issue" had a recent crash on the M5 near Taunton which killed seven people happened nearer to Bristol.

The council leader said representatives from the authority would be meeting members of the protest camp later to discuss the issue.

"The air ambulance needs to land on College Green," she said.

"It was put to us that when we had the accident [on the M5 near Taunton] last week and had it been nearer to Bristol there would have been a major issue."

The land is owned by Bristol Cathedral but is maintained and managed by Bristol City Council.

The demonstrators have been inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement in the US and say they intend to stay as long as possible.
