Bristol school plans autism unit

Plans to develop a new unit for children with autism at a Bristol school have been announced.

The development at Chipping Sodbury School would include classroom space, separate entrance, kitchen and toilets facilities and outdoor space.

The school places are needed to meet an increase in children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, according to South Gloucestershire Council.

The six-week consultation ends on 18 March and a decision expected by 1 May.

The proposal for the new eight place unit has been put forward by the council, in partnership with the school, to allow children with "complex needs" to attend school within their community.

According to the authority, the "primary purpose is to improve provision" but it is also more cost effective then an "alternative provision" outside the South Gloucestershire area.

A final decision on the autistic spectrum unit is due to be made in July, following a consultation.

If approved work is expected to begin in January 2014.
