New 24-hour bus service for Bristol

A group campaigning to reduce bus fares in Bristol has welcomed a new 24-hour service for the city but said it hoped prices would be "affordable".

First Bus said the service on the 75 route between Hengrove and Cribbs Causeway, would start on 24 March.

The company said its new round-the clock service was to "support shift workers and the night-time economy".

Daniel Farr, from Make Fares Fair, said: "First often start fares quite low and then they go up."

Consultation on fares

He added: "It all depends on the details of the prices and how affordable it will be.

"It sounds encouraging if they want to help the hard-working people of Bristol - working in the night-time economy - but that's as long as it is affordable for them."

Marc Reddy, from First Bus, said: "From 24 March, buses will run around the clock on this route, in a move that is expected to be welcomed by shift workers and those people wishing to make even more of Bristol's night-time economy - staying out later and enjoying all the city has to offer. "

He said the company was also adding other late night journeys to several other routes including the 40, 43, 44, 48, 54, 70 and 90.

A basic night ticket on the 24-hour 75 service will cost £2.90.

First Bus is holding a consultation on the price of its fares in the Greater Bristol area and hopes to complete the review by the end of the summer.
