The BBC News Website has taken a look at the £430m new Southmead Hospital Bristol, which is due to open in one year's time.

The building itself is now complete and work is well underway to add the fixtures and fittings to each area. One of the most striking elements of the Brunel building is its 280 metre long atrium.

The first patients will be moved into the new building in mid-May next year with all other patients, teams and departments moving across during the following two weeks. By 28 May the hospital should be fully open.

Designers said landscaping was an important aspect of the building and they aimed to connect the inside to the outside and bring light into the building.

Coloured glass walls mark the different areas to help guide patients around the hospital.

Patients will check in in the atrium area and then take the lifts or stairs up to the relevant department. The atrium will also include a cafe, shops and waiting areas.

There will be a main nursing station on each 32-bed unit. Each unit has 24 single rooms and two four-bed bays.

Of the 800 beds in the new building, 75% will be in single rooms and 25 % will be four-bed bays.

The single rooms are almost twice the size of some single rooms currently in use at the trust's buildings. Their size means they have been able to incorporate features that will make nursing more efficient and enable better care for patients.

Single bed rooms come with an en-suite toilet and shower rooms, which will provide greater privacy and dignity.

Procedure Rooms are designed to allow more complex treatments to take place away from the bedrooms and outpatient areas.
