Bristol drivers warned of high tide flood risk

Motorists in parts of Bristol are being warned of the risk of flooding from high tides on Sunday and Monday.

A combination of spring tides and a small tidal surge means the River Avon could overtop in vulnerable areas.

Bristol City Council said while this could cause some transport disruption, significant flooding of properties is not expected.

A spokesman said the water is likely to be at the same level as that experienced in January and February.

On Sunday the high tides are predicted to occur at 07:50 and 20:13 GMT, on Monday at 08:33 and 20:54 GMT.

Avon Crescent will remain closed to all traffic and pedestrians over the weekend to allow the flood barrier to be deployed.

"This will be taken down on Monday morning as soon as possible after the predicted high tide," the council spokesman said.

"The Cumberland Basin car park will be closed from Saturday and traffic management officers will be monitoring likely hotspots.

"The whole of the Portway may be closed if the river rises higher than predicted," he added.
