An inquiry into circumstances surrounding the death of a man wrongly branded a paedophile is nearing completion, the police watchdog said.

Bijan Ebrahimi was beaten to death and set on fire near his Bristol home. He had made numerous calls to the police.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is currently deciding if charges should be brought against three police officers and a PCSO who dealt with Mr Ebrahimi.

Mr Ebrahimi's family said they remained "desperate" for answers.

Speaking last month his relatives said they could not wait any longer for the end of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) inquiry, which is examining police handling of events before the murder.

An IPCC spokeswoman said the final investigation report was being compiled.

"We are continuing to update Mr Ebrahimi's family and other interested parties as we reach the final stages of this complex investigation," she added.

The IPCC is also investigating the actions of six other police officers and six civilian staff from Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

Lee James, 24, who admitted Mr Ebrahimi's murder in July 2013, was jailed for a minimum of 18 years last November.
