The explosion was described by a neighbour as "shocking"
Masked men blew up a Bristol cash machine and made off with stolen cash in the early hours on Wednesday.
Police confirmed that money had been stolen from the cash point on Bishopsworth Road at about 02:00 BST.
A resident described the "shocking" moment he was woken by an explosion in Bedminster Down.
"I heard some voices, looked out of the window, and three or four gentlemen in balaclavas were loading up... bags of money, very casually," he told the BBC.
"They blew [the cash point] up with gas oxyacetylene equipment. It was a very dangerous manoeuvre, I'm surprised no-one was hurt."
Police would not confirm that gas canisters had been used to blow up the machine at the Co-Op supermarket in Bedminster Down.

The raid caused extensive damage
The amount of money stolen has not been confirmed - but some was found in a car which was found abandoned in Gatehouse Court, Bishopsworth, just before 06:00.
