Drunk hit-and-run driver jailed over pedestrian crossing death

A drunk driver who killed a woman while speeding through a pedestrian crossing and then driving off has been jailed for five and a half years.
Jake Mitchell, 25, was more than twice over the legal alcohol limit when he hit Megan Brogan, 27, in Stoke Gifford, Bristol on 19 January.
He previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Ms Brogan, from Welwyn, Hertfordshire, died from her injuries at the scene.
Her father, Ian Brogan, witnessed his daughter being hit and described what he saw.
Mr Brogan said the car "hit her so hard it took off one of her legs and dragged and threw her 60 feet".
On passing sentence, Judge Julian Lambert said: "You killed a young woman before her father's very eyes. People don't get over a loss like that.
"Your choices had terrible, terrible consequences."
Mitchell, of Ratcliffe Drive, Stoke Gifford, was also disqualified from driving for five years.
Avon and Somerset Police collision investigator Carl Derosa said: "Jake Mitchell got behind the wheel of his car knowing he was over the alcohol limit and not fit to drive.
"His cowardly and selfish actions following the collision with Megan further illustrate his complete disregard for anyone else.
"The pain and suffering his actions caused on that night will stay with Megan's family for the rest of their lives.
"I hope today's sentencing acts as a stark warning to others who are tempted to drive after consuming excess alcohol."
