One of Bristol's busiest roads is to be closed later to allow beams for a new bridge to be hoisted into place.

Winterstoke Road will be shut at 20:00 GMT on Saturday for 24 hours, from the Ashton Gate underpass to the roundabout with Barons Close/Wedlock Way.

It is to allow work on the city's MetroBus project and will allow buses to avoid Winterstoke Road and the Cumberland Basin.

Football fans using the Avonline car park are reminded to leave by 20:00.

Councillor Mark Bradshaw, who is responsible for transport, said the bridge would help bus passengers benefit by "quicker and more reliable journey times".

A further 10 consecutive weekend closures are planned between the underpass and the Cala Road trading estate, weather permitting.
