Ellis Smith admitted hitting a six-year-old while on his motorbike

A motorcyclist has been jailed for two years and four months after a crash left a six-year-old seriously injured.

Ellis Smith, 21, failed to stop after hitting the boy on Wade Street, Bristol, on 28 January.

He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, using a vehicle without insurance and perverting the cause of justice.

The boy's family said Smith's actions were "unforgiveable".

The six-year-old spent almost three weeks in hospital being treated for multiple fractures, head and internal injuries after the crash. He will need further physiotherapy for two years, police said.

His family said: "No parent should have to go through what we have been through."

"This was a 20mph zone and his (Smith's) actions have caused significant injuries to our son. It is unforgiveable. We would like to thank the police for their hard work."

Smith, of Kingsmead Road in Bristol, was also disqualified from driving for three years and two months in the sentencing at Bristol Crown Court.
