Police said emergency services were called to the scene at about 11:15 BST after reports of a white BMW colliding with the central reservation.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital. His family have been informed.

The M5 was closed between junctions 17 and 18 while recovery work was carried out and fully reopened at 14:40 BST.

Avon and Somerset Police said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the event or has dashcam footage.
