Remembrance Day: West of England falls silent to pay respects

People living across the west of England have been paying their respects this Remembrance weekend.

Parades of remembrance, services and wreath-laying ceremonies were held in Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire.

The region fell silent at 11:00 GMT on Saturday and Sunday to commemorate those who lost their lives in war.

Allan Stanistreet, a veteran who served for 30 years, said: "Without them, we wouldn't be here."

Despite the rain, people filled Clevedon Pier to see service cadets marching and playing instruments.

A rocket was fired to mark the start of the two-minute silence.

In Weston-super-Mare, a parade of cadets, military personnel and scouts and guides set off from the High Street at 10:25.

They made their way to the war memorial in Grove Park to pay their respects and watch a wreath laying ceremony.

MP John Penrose was in attendance and placed a wreath on the memorial.

Young beavers, cubs and scouts from the Third Weston St Paul's group also paid their respects.

A service featuring hymns was also held, along with the two-minute silence.

After the service, people left tributes in a field of remembrance, located to the right of the memorial.

Services were held across Tidworth in Wiltshire, led by Councillor Humph Jones and Mayor, Carole Webb.

The Last Post was played on the bugle and wreaths were laid at the foot of a war memorial statue.

Fran Chandler attended the service to pay her respects her son, Cpl Matthew Hatfield, who served in the Royal Tank Regiment and died in 2017.

Bristol Easton Salvation Army marched to the Cenotaph in the city centre ahead of the Remembrance service.

And in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, a parade was held at the war memorial.

Marianna, from Stoke Gifford, was in attendance with her parents.

The 19-month-old brought her teddy bear wearing a poppy to see the wreaths being laid.
