The Conservative Party have chosen its candidate to stand in the upcoming by-election.

The Kingswood by-election was triggered after its Tory MP Chris Skidmore quit over new oil and gas licences.

The Conservative Party confirmed Sam Bromiley has been selected to stand for the party when polls open on 15 February.

He joins ex-Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan on the ballot who is standing for the Labour Party.

The Kingswood constituency is on the outskirts of Bristol in South Gloucestershire, and includes districts such as Hanham and Longwell Green.

Mr Skidmore, the former energy minister, resigned from the Government over the government's energy plans earlier this month.

The Conservative Party has held the Kingswood seat since 2010, and had a majority of 11,220 in the 2019 general election.

The seat had previously been held by Labour from 1992 to 2010.

Mr Bromiley grew up and has lived in Kingswood his whole life.

Labour candidate Mr Egan is already Labour's general election candidate for Bristol North East and also grew up in the Kingswood area.

The constituency is set to be abolished at the next general election following a boundary review.
