Hundreds of people have gathered to commemorate those killed in the Holocaust.

People in Bristol marked Holocaust Memorial Day at the city's annual event which included a range of speakers.

Among them was Stephen Breuer, originally from Hungary, who survived the Holocaust but many of his family members were killed.

He said he feels the loss "all of the time" and it is "always difficult".

Holocaust Memorial Day is held every year across Europe on 27 January, the date of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. Mr Breuer said he lost his father, three uncles, five aunts and lots of other family members in the Holocaust.

"It's always difficult, there is always an emotional price to pay," he said.

"I feel their loss all the time, but there's nothing I can do about it."

"Remember the Holocaust, what happened to the Jews, and to other people in other parts of the world.

"Whenever you see an opportunity of opposing oppression or discrimination, please do it, please try."

The event, themed Fragility of Freedom, took place at City Hall and included further talks from 11 year old school pupil and activist, Elinor Beard, North Somerset MP Dr Liam Fox, Bristol's Lord Mayor and sixth formers from Bristol schools.

Faith leaders Rabbi Mendy Singer and Father Richard McKay also led attendees in a ceremony.Bristol Holocaust Memorial Day steering group chairwoman, Marian Liebmann, said this year's theme is to remind people they need to look out for others who "are not being allowed to practise their religion or to be who they are."

"There are so many places in the world where these awful things are happening, and we must try and do something every day," she said.

"There are opportunities to come together.

"Anything that I can do to make this world a better place, where people are welcomed, whoever they are, then I would like to do that."
