A woman has been killed in a crash which closed a section of the M4 near Bristol.

It happened at about 12:50 GMT on Saturday on the westbound carriageway of the motorway, and involved five vehicles.

The woman, aged in her 60s, was confirmed dead at the scene, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed for most of Saturday afternoon but reopened at about 17:00 GMT.

The crash happened between Junction 19 (M32) and Junction 20 (Almondsbury Interchange).

Witnesses are being asked contact police.

"The woman's next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time," the force said in a statement.

"Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or have dashcam footage, which could aid their investigation."
