The 'serious' crash involved one vehicle

Two lanes of the M5 on the outskirts of Bristol have reopened after a "serious" crash involving one car.

Emergency services were called to the M5 northbound near J19 at Portishead at 10:30 BST on Wednesday.

Officers closed all lanes between junctions 20 at and 19 after a car left the carriageway.

The driver of the car has been taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing, police said.

Traffic was held to a standstill after the incident and at the time National Highways said there were delays of at least 20 minutes.

Avon and Somerset Police said the carriageway has since reopened except for a single lane closure, which remains in place to allow the vehicle to be recovered.
