Firm to take over waste disposal in Peterborough

Rubbish collection, street cleaning and grounds maintenance services in Peterborough are being handed over to a private firm in a bid to help save £1m.

Peterborough City Council has announced that a range of council services will be carried out by maintenance firm Enterprise Managed Services (EMS).

The multimillion-pound 23-year contract includes the disposal of household waste and recycling.

It also includes property design and maintenance and grounds maintenance.

'Harnessing skills'

All 600 of the council's City Services staff will transfer to EMS.

The contract is due to start in March. The council says the aim of the strategic partnership is to improve these services, while providing the best value for taxpayers.

The Conservative-controlled council's deputy leader Matthew Lee said: "I'm convinced that Enterprise is the right long-term partner for Peterborough and I am excited about what this will mean for the services being provided through the strategic partnership."

Neil Kirkby, group chief executive of EMS, said: "We look forward to welcoming the team into the new organisation and to harnessing their skills, experience and local knowledge as we improve existing services and develop new ones."
