Wisbech metal theft causes 1,700-home power cut
- Published
Thieves trying to steal metal at a Cambridgeshire electricity substation caused an explosion which cut power to 1,700 homes.
About 160 properties in Wisbech are still without electricity following the incident on Friday night.
UK Power Networks said engineers have to check each home to ensure it is safe to restore power.
The majority of homes were reconnected overnight but it is expected to take all of Saturday to reach the remainder.
The Red Cross is supplying hot drinks and checking on vulnerable people.
