A1 in Cambridgeshire reopens after fatal plane crash

The plane crashed in a field after reportedly flying into an electricity pylon

The A1 in Cambridgeshire has been reopened following a fatal plane crash near Peterborough on Friday.

Both carriageways of the road were reopened by 15:00 BST on Saturday after work took place to repair power lines hit by the light aircraft.

The plane came down in fields at Water Newton, near Sibson Airfield at about 14:15 BST on Friday.

The male pilot was killed but has yet to be named as formal identification has not taken place.

Wreckage removed

Police have not released any further details, but said the aircraft had flown from Warwickshire.

Crash investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have been at the scene and the wreckage of the aircraft has now been removed.

The A1 was closed between junction 17 at Haddon and the A47 at Wansford as engineers worked to repair an electricity cable spanning the road.

A National Grid spokeswoman said a temporary repair to the cable had been made but that engineers would need to return, possibly early next week, to put a permanent solution in place.

The crash had not affected electricity supply, she added.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We will agree a time to make sure the work causes as little impact to traffic as possible."
