Cambridge IVF NHS fertility unit opens

A new NHS clinic has opened in Cambridge, promising to offer "comprehensive" fertility treatment.

Cambridge IVF is a purpose-built unit near to the city's Addenbrooke's Hospital site.

Lead clinician, Raj Mathur, said the clinic was the first in the east of England to offer all fertility services to patients as part of the NHS.

He said the centre would provide services not offered by IVF-only clinics, including ovulation induction.

"IVF is only one of the fertility treatments, and comes almost at the end of the process when women are trying for a baby," Mr Mathur said.

"We provide all the other services including surgery for endometriosis and hormonal treatment - all the services that just IVF clinics can't - and we can offer IVF on top of those."

The clinic also offers the same services to patients funding their own treatment.

The new site includes a theatre and recovery area, three scan and consultation rooms, and laboratories.

It forms part of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
