Gurkhas lead Peterborough Cathedral remembrance parade

Gurkha soldiers from the Peterborough area, veterans and members of the armed forces led a Remembrance Sunday parade from the city's cathedral.

Mayor of Peterborough Paula Thacker MBE dispensed with the tradition of leading the procession to lay wreaths.

She said: "I know that it is usual protocol for the mayor to lead the Remembrance Sunday parade.

"However I believe passionately veterans and those still serving in conflicts should walk before me."

A service of remembrance was held at Peterborough Cathedral to honour those who have lost their lives fighting for their country.

Following the hour-long service the procession was led back to the Town Hall where a poppy wreath was unveiled above the building's Bridge Street entrance.

This commemorates those council members and staff who were killed in the two world wars.

It was followed by a procession through the city's streets, led by representatives of the Army, the Royal British Legion and veteran organisations and the mayor took the salute from a dais, positioned in front of the Town Hall.
