New buses will increase the frequency of services on Cambridgeshire's guided busway, according to operator Stagecoach.

The company - one of two serving the route which links Huntingdon with Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital - said it had ordered eight new vehicles.

Regional director Andy Campbell said demand for the service had encouraged the company to increase the fleet.

The new buses are expected to be in operation by the summer.

The guided busway was opened in August and has reportedly carried more than one million passengers since then.

"We have already been putting additional buses on at peak times to cope with the demand," Mr Campbell said.

"The extra vehicles will enable us to increase the frequency of some services from every 10 minutes to every seven or eight minutes.

"Together with a new stop planned for St Ives, we will be able to reduce the journey time even further."

Stagecoach in Cambridgeshire will take delivery of the three double decker buses and five single deckers as part of the company's £60m investment in its UK-wide fleet.
