A prisoner stabbed another with a "makeshift weapon" made using a blade and a wooden spoon

A prisoner already serving two life sentences has been given a third after stabbing a fellow inmate with a "knife" he made from a wooden spoon.

David Watts, 43, stabbed his victim, 61, in the neck at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire, on 21 June last year.

He denied attempted murder but admitted wounding with intent and possessing a bladed weapon.

Watts had melted a blade on to a wooden spoon. His "makeshift weapon caused significant harm", police said.

The victim initially thought he had been punched on the side of his head, before realising he had been stabbed in the neck, police said.

He has since recovered from his injuries.

Watts was initially sentenced to life after being convicted of wounding and burglary in 2001.

While serving his term in HMP Whitemoor, near March, he was convicted of the attempted murder of an inmate in 2010 and given another life sentence.

On Monday, he was handed his third life sentence at Peterborough Crown Court after denying attempted murder, but admitting possessing a bladed article in a prison and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The Crown Prosecution Service ordered the attempted murder charge to remain on Watts' file.
