The Battle of the Somme: Remembering 11th Suffolks

Commemorations have been taking place across the country and in France to mark 100 years since The Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest day in British military history.

On 1 July 1916, the 800 men of 11th Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment, left the safety of their camp and prepared to advance on German positions.

On the first day of battle, 200 of them lost their lives and a further 500 were injured.

Many of the men came from Cambridgeshire and some of those who died were buried at La Boisselle.
