A "major incident" has been declared on the guided busway in Cambridge

A cyclist has died after being hit by a bus on the guided busway in Cambridge, police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to the crash site in Trumpington, near Addenbrooke's Hospital, at about 16:45 BST.

The Road Policing Unit told the BBC its "priority" was to identify the man and let his family know.

Stagecoach East said its thoughts were with the victim's loved ones and it was assisting police with their inquiries.

Sgt Mark Dollard, from the unit, said: "Unfortunately a cyclist has collided with a guided bus and lost his life.

"Our priority is identifying the victim and letting their family know what's occurred, providing them with the appropriate support and investigating as fully as possible the circumstances."

He added that it was "a large scale response" with a number of police, fire and ambulance service staff involved.

The bus company said the busway was closed at Long Road while an investigation was carried out.
