Police were called to the house in Peterborough city centre at 11:30 BST on Thursday

A woman arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a delivery driver called police with concerns for a child left home alone has been released and allowed back to her children.

Police were called on Thursday and found two children, aged two and five, alone in a Peterborough house.

They were taken into care and a woman was arrested.

Officers said they liaised with social workers and the family will be supported by the care service.

The children were found after Cambridgeshire Police officers forced their way into the house.

At the time of the woman's arrest, they praised the driver for "acting on his instincts... when he felt something wasn't right".

The force said it was "working with social services to find the best solution for [the children]".

The woman has now been released from custody and issued with a community resolution.

"This means she is required to engage with social care and will be given support with the care of her children," police said in a statement on Facebook, external.

"In cases such as these, we work closely with social care to understand the full context of the situation and ensure that any action taken is in the best interests of the children involved," they wrote.

"After liaising with social services, the children have returned to the care of their parents who will be supported by the service and will be required to complete parenting courses."
