Vandals have caused damage at a cathedral graveyard, ripping out roses, kicking over a metal obelisk and turning grave markers upside down.

They struck at Peterborough Cathedral at about 19:00 BST on Monday.

Staff at the 900-year-old cathedral said the vandalism showed "a complete lack of respect for the dead and their loved ones."

Cambridgeshire Police has been informed and anyone with information is asked to contact the force quoting 35/76120/23.

A spokesperson for Peterborough Cathedral said: "Our gardeners work hard to ensure that the ancient burial grounds that surround our Cathedral are a place where all can come to reflect and pay their respects.

"The damage can be repaired and the area restored to its original state in the next few days."
