The nursery in Cambridge was shut on Wednesday

A nursery has been closed by education watchdog Ofsted over safeguarding concerns.

The Cambridge Day Nursery on Milton Road, Cambridge, was visited by inspectors on Tuesday and it closed the following day.

It followed an initial assessment on 12 September where Ofsted said the setting was not meeting some of its requirements.

The nursery has been approached for comment.

According to a report on the Ofsted website, external, the Cambridge Day Nursery was issued with compliance action after its first visit.

It was told it had to "improve risk assessment procedures and take action to minimise or remove hazards, so that children are not exposed to unnecessary risk".

A second point told the nursery it needed to "improve hygiene practices to ensure the premises are fit for purpose and children's good health is promoted".

The nursery was told to take action on both of these points by 30 September.

On its website, the nursery claims to be a "home away from home", with a focus on outdoor learning and over 40 years of experience and excellence "in the care, education and development of children".

Ofsted told the BBC it inspected the nursery on Tuesday and suspended the provider on Wednesday due to concerns around safeguarding and safety.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "We are aware of the current situation at Cambridge Day Nursery.

"The county council does not run the nursery but is currently working as a matter of urgency with other nurseries and childminders nearby to help families find places for their children."
