Libraries and community centres in Peterborough set to be sold off

The council is considering selling almost 80 additional properties

A city council has named several community centres and libraries it is considering selling off.

Matley community centre, Stanground library and the Thorpe Wood registry office are among dozens identified in the Peterborough list.

Last month, the authority announced it had identified a further 79 buildings that could be sold to save money. They not yet been made public.

The council said it would work to "limit the impact" on affected groups.

The community buildings are part of a list of council-owned properties at various stages of the disposals process.

Council-owned land, parts of its rural estate, offices, car parks and larger buildings such as TK Maxx, Herewards Cross and North Westgate are also listed. 

It also includes Thorney community centre and library, Eye youth centre and library, the Showman's Guild and Thistle Drive community centre, the Herlington Centre and the Hodgson Centre. 

'Limit impact'

Peterborough City Council is facing a growing budget gap of up to £14m by 2026 and has been encouraged by independent financial advisors to identify assets it could sell off to help plug the gap. 

In some instances, potential buyers have already been identified, although no final decision has been made. 

In a statement, a city council spokesperson said: "It is usual for councils to regularly review their assets and determine whether to retain and invest in them or dispose in the best interests of taxpayers.

"In all cases, where buildings might be earmarked for closure, we will work with all affected groups on a relocation plan to limit the impact as far as possible."
