A 14-year-old was given advice after an e-scooter crash in Peterborough city centre

A three-year-old boy was taken to hospital with head injuries after being hit by an e-scooter.

Cambridgeshire Police said officers were called at 16:23 GMT on Saturday to reports of an e-scooter crash in Westgate, Peterborough.

The boy was taken to hospital with minor head injuries but was released later that day.

Words of advice were given to a 14-year-old boy who was riding the e-scooter and his parents, police said.

Cambridgeshire Police said it was a "traumatic incident for the child, but it could have been much worse".

Police said they had seen an increase in people using the scooters, with many "unaware of the current laws around their use".

"They are illegal to use on a public road without complying with a number of legal requirements including insurance, conformity with technical standards and standards of use, payment of vehicle tax, licensing, and registration, driver testing and licensing, and the use of relevant safety equipment," the force said.

"They are legal to use on private land with the owner's permission and in case of any government trials, external.

"With the festive season fast approaching we're conscious e-scooters may be on a few Christmas lists. Please know the law, external before buying one."
