The Luxmuralis light and sound show is a 45-minute immersive experience at Peterborough Cathedral

A cathedral is to become a canvas for an "astounding" digital light and sound show for a third year.

Luxmuralis, external is returning to Peterborough Cathedral, external with a nativity story about the birth of Jesus called The Manger.

In a change from previous years, the show will take place in the cathedral's interior illuminated by a series of moving images for a multi-sensory experience.

Accompanying the light projections will be an original soundtrack.

The immersive event allows people to meander inside the cathedral and journey through different installations.

Artistic director, Peter Walker, said: "What people are going to see is pretty much every inch of the interior bathed in light and filled with sound."

The installations takes visitors through a series of scenes, from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and images of angels to some more contemporary creations and "maybe even a little glimpse of Santa".

The experience then ends in the nave where people will be "taken on a journey to the traditional story of Christmas", the nativity, he said.

"Light allows people to engage with fine art, to engage with these beautiful buildings," he added.

"Instead of looking at a painting, they are walking through the artwork and actually become part of it. It almost brings communities and groups together because you all experience the art together, bathed in the light and it creates a really beautiful experience."

The cathedral's head of communications, Paul Stainton, said: "This year we are aiming to provide a completely fresh experience for people, by bringing the whole show inside of the cathedral for the first time.

"Christmas is a time of joy, wonder and light so we want to share the Christmas story and invite everyone to come along and see the inside of the cathedral completely transformed by light and sound and to start their Christmas celebrations with us."

The installation will start on 22 November and run for four days.
