Cambridge United fans 'gutted' at Mark Bonner sacking

Cambridge United fans have described the sacking of head coach Mark Bonner as "very sad".

Supporters said Bonner's departure was not a complete surprise after the team's recent performances and Tuesday night's defeat to Lincoln City.

One, Michael Barnes, said: "It's very sad. Mark's done a fantastic job for the club."

Bonner became head coach in March 2020 and led the team to promotion to League One the following year.

Liz Pamplin said she was surprised Bonner had been fired and said: "He's been absolutely brilliant"

Liz Pamplin, 46, a schoolteacher, said: "I'm genuinely gutted that we sacked Bons.

"I think he's been a brilliant manager. What he's done over the last few years and the memories we've had over the last few years are things we'll never forget."

Michael Barnes said he felt sad Bonner was leaving, adding: "Met him a few times, a great lad"

Michael Barnes, 63, who is retired and has been a U's fan for more than 20 years, said: "Many fans felt it was only a matter of time.

"Football is a ruthless, results-driven business. When a team is not getting the results, it's always the manager that carries the can."

Martin Churchman was not shocked by the news but said: "We had some great times with Bono"

Martin Churchman, 63, a hospital administrator, said Bonner was a "good coach but there's only so much time we can give".

He added: "Think it's time for a new face."

Cambridge-born Bonner, 38, was appointed in January 2020, initially as interim boss, and agreed a new long-term contract in September.
