Phillip Robinson, 40, pleaded guilty and was jailed after a hearing at Peterborough Crown Court

A man has been jailed after he crept into his neighbour's bedroom while she slept at night.

Phillip Robinson, 40, of Warboys, Cambridgeshire, pleaded guilty to stalking involving serious harm and distress, at Peterborough Crown Court.

Police said his behaviour was "despicable" after he was sentenced to two years and three months.

When he was first arrested Robinson carried on stalking the woman despite being warned not to go near her again.

On 11 June at about 23:30 BST Robinson climbed through an unlocked window, and went upstairs, which woke the woman with a jolt.

She recognised him as her neighbour. When she shouted for him to get out, family members woke up and managed to get him outside, where he apologised.

'Frightening experience'

Cambridgeshire Police were told he had carried out a stalking campaign that escalated quickly.

He would sit on his mobility scooter at the end of his driveway, watching her home and would try to talk to her, which she tried to avoid.

Robinson would then stay for about 15 minutes and faced her home and back garden.

After his June arrest he breached his bail conditions several times and was arrested for a continuation of stalking.

In a police interview, Robinson said the victim had flirted with him by wearing shorts and because she had talked to him, but confirmed she had never told him her name.

He said he appeared in her bedroom, as he thought she had sent him a text inviting him, but the force said he did not receive any message.

Det Con Alan Tregilgas said: "Robinson's behaviour was despicable - it was a frightening experience for the victim in her own home where she should feel safe."

He thanked the victim for reporting the incident.
