A shopping centre was evacuated and closed after reports of a security threat, police said.

Officers from Cambridgeshire Police were called to the Queensgate shopping centre in Peterborough at 10:30 GMT on Thursday.

The nature of the alert has not been revealed but security staff shut the centre "as a precaution".

The shopping centre was also closed for a time and evacuated due to a security threat in November.

A police spokeswoman said: "We were contacted by a store manager at Queensgate Shopping Centre at about 10.30 this morning reporting contact about a security threat to their store today.

"A decision has been made by Queensgate security to evacuate the centre as a precaution... work is ongoing to establish further detail about the threat and anyone involved."

The police confirmed that shoppers were allowed to return to the centre about 13:00 GMT.
