A cat called Peanut has gained fame in his town for his pub crawling antics.

For the past six months the ginger tom has been a regular at several hostelries in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.

The George Hotel in the town has installed a bed for him, and supplied him with a Christmas stocking.

Helen Wilson, the cat's owner said: "He loves a fuss; I am so pleased he is so contented. He would not go there if he was not happy."

She got Peanut when he was seven weeks old.

"After keeping him inside for a while, he started to venture out and would disappear," she said.

"I had reports of him frequenting the George Hotel. I retrieved him, but he kept nipping off up there."

Peanut has been turning up in all weathers, sometimes looking "a bit bedraggled and sorry for himself"

Diane Maher, landlady of the George Hotel, on the town's High Street, first saw Peanut at the Bramley House Hotel about six months ago.

"He is becoming Facebook famous. Everyone loves to fuss him. When I take a tray of drinks out, he is always on someone's lap being pampered," she said.

Ms Maher said the cat started to visit her pub about three months ago.

"He would turn up in any weather, sometimes a bit bedraggled and looking sorry for himself," she added.

"As an animal lover, I soon grew to love him. I installed a bed for him in our back lobby, and bought him a Christmas stocking.

"Just recently he has also started to hang around the smoking area of the Chatteris Working Men's Club.

"He has gained quite a following - my regulars always look out for him.

"There is nothing he likes more than going on a pub crawl."
