A woman in her 20s suffered serious injuries following a "nasty" assault.

Cambridgeshire Police said the attack took place between 5:10 GMT and 5:40 on Saturday in Church Walk, off Broadway, in Peterborough city centre.

She was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries and later discharged.

A man, 51, from Peterborough was arrested after the attack and has been released on bail.

A scene was cordoned off in Broadway and a short section of the road was closed.

Det Sgt Sarah Morgan asked witnesses to get in contact and said: "This was a nasty and sustained assault which left a young woman in hospital."

She added: "We have CCTV which shows a group of people walking along Church Walk. We do not think any of them were involved but they could have information crucial to our investigation."
