A new science centre has opened at a university, which includes a £1.9m investment into cutting-edge equipment and a teaching and research space.

Anglia Ruskin University's (ARU) new Sensory Science Centre in Cambridge was officially opened on Wednesday evening.

Students studying optometry, ophthalmic dispensing and audiology will be able to use the equipment.

Its opening coincides with the 30th anniversary of vision and hearing sciences at the Cambridge campus.

ARU is one of a few UK universities with its own eye clinic, which helps students gain hands-on experience while delivering free care to the local community.

Since opening in 2000, the clinic has provided more than 220,000 free eye tests.

The new centre's technology includes LED ophthalmoscopes, video slit lamps and a corneal topographer.

Alongside the new centre, the university is also introducing a masters degree in optometry and a undergraduate ophthalmic dispensing degree.

Dr Helen Keyes, head of school at ARU, said: "Vision and hearing courses have now been taught at ARU in Cambridge for 30 years, and new equipment within the Sensory Science Centre ensures that ARU remains at the cutting edge.

"This is a wonderful investment for our students, and for the members of the public they will go on to serve."
