A woman in her 40s who was found in a ditch has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The woman had gone for a walk at about 18:00 GMT on Sunday and was found on Beach Road in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, after midnight on Monday, police said.

She was taken to hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police said the woman could have been involved in a collision and are appealing for witnesses.

The woman was found close to an industrial unit on a stretch of road with no street lighting or clear footpath.

PC Alex Bond, of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "We believe the victim was involved in a collision but the vehicle didn't stop at the scene.

"It was dark at the time, so the driver may not have known they hit someone.

"I am asking anyone who was driving along that stretch of road yesterday evening to please get in touch if they saw anything or have dashcam footage from the area."
