The RSPCA has launched a appeal for information after two kittens were found abandoned in a bag in Cambridgeshire.

The animals were found in a black holdall close to the allotments near Holme Road in Yaxley on 30 January.

Animal rescue officer Naomi Sadoff took the kittens for a check-up and found they were covered in fleas.

One kitten is a black female and the other is a white male with a tabby tail and tabby patch on his head.

They have been described as "very friendly" and staff said they could be about five to six months old.

Ms Sadoff said: "We are grateful to the member of the public who found these poor kittens and kept them safe.

"They had been found inside a black holdall bag and there were some biscuits inside.

"Neither cat was microchipped.

"Both kittens were very friendly and it's so sad to think someone just abandoned them in this way."

The charity said it received 20,999 reports of an abandoned animal in 2023, a higher annual total than in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Ms Sadoff said: "We understand the financial difficulties some people are experiencing right now, however abandoning your pet is never the answer.

"There is help and support available and we would urge people to contact their vets, local rescues and animal welfare charities."
