A man who carried out a supermarket robbery at knife point has been jailed.

Anthony Gawthrop, 38, threatened a member of staff with a knife at the Co-op in Milton Road, Cambridge on 29 December.

He ordered the worker to open the till and empty the contents into a plastic bag. He made off with £200.

Gawthrop, of no fixed address, previously pleaded guilty to robbery and was jailed for 30 months at Peterborough Crown Court on Friday

Det Con Matthew Lander said: "This sentence demonstrates the seriousness with which the police and the courts take robbery and knife crime.

"Although the victim in this case was not harmed, the terror he must have felt as a result of Gawthrop's actions, would have been awful.

"I hope this sentence provides the victim with some sense of satisfaction and closure."
