Jakub Nawrocki, 27, from Peterborough, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation

A man who strangled a woman after she criticised him for being untidy has been jailed for 18 months.

Jakub Nawrocki, 27, from Peterborough, changed an intentional strangulation plea from not guilty to guilty.

The victim said Nawrocki had squeezed her neck before, and she lived in fear that he could kill her.

Police have commended the victim's bravery for reporting the incident and said "Nawrocki's behaviour was disgraceful".

Nawrocki, of Naseby Close, attacked the woman while she was washing up on 26 October, Cambridgeshire Police said.

The following day, the force was alerted and officers went to see the victim.

'Disgraceful'

She said Nawrocki had squeezed her neck before, and she lived in fear that he could kill her.

Nawrocki returned to the victim's home while officers were there and he was arrested.

Det Con Kyle Miskin said: "I want to commend the victim's bravery for speaking to us about the abuse.

"Nawrocki's behaviour was disgraceful - people should not be living in fear like she was.

"We would strongly urge anyone who is a victim [of] abuse to contact police or call the national domestic violence helpline on 0808 2000 247."

At Cambridge Crown Court, Nawrocki was sentenced to 561 days in prison and received a 10-year restraining order.
