A blaze at a commercial garage in a city centre was brought under control nine hours after crews were called.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service posted warnings about the fire in Lincoln Road, Peterborough, that broke out at about 18:30 GMT on Friday.

The operation was scaled back at 23:00. The last crew left the scene at 03:40.

A spokeswoman said firefighters had returned to the site this morning to check for hotspots. The road remains closed.

A fire investigation will begin into the cause of the fire, a spokeswoman added

Six crews tackled the blaze at its height.

The fire service had urged people to stay away from the area and keep doors and windows closed as tyres were still smouldering, but that warning is no longer in place.

"The whole building was affected by the fire as well as some outbuildings" but firefighters "managed to protect three adjacent properties", said the spokeswoman.

No casualties were reported and a fire investigation will begin, she added.
