Suspected arson at disused brewery in Redruth

A fire at a disused brewery in Cornwall is being investigated as a suspected arson attack, firefighters have said.

The blaze at the Old Brewery in Redruth started at about 18:00 BST on Saturday and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had spread to the roof.

Crews from Redruth, Camborne, Helston and Truro tackled the fire, which is being investigated by Devon and Cornwall Police.

There have been several fires at the 18th Century building in recent years.

A suspected arson attack was also investigated at the former brewery in 2007 and firefighters also tackled blazes at the site in 2010 and 2011.

Last year, plans were announced to transform the building into an archive and record centre and the project is in line for more than £9m of Heritage Lottery funding.

Last month the current owners, from Hong Kong, promised funding for the project.
