An overseas student has appeared in court accused of threatening people with a replica gun on a university campus.

Armed police were called to Exeter University on Wednesday after reports of a "man making threats...whilst in possession of a handgun".

Yihe Xiong, 25, of Bonhay Road, Exeter, was charged at Exeter Magistrates' Court with having an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

He was released on bail.

Mr Xiong, a postgraduate student from China, did not enter a plea and gave his name and address through an interpreter.

He is due to appear at Exeter Crown Court on 19 July.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the weapon seized was not "a viable firearm" and no-one had been injured.

Supt Matt Lawler said: "I would like to reiterate our thanks to the university, its staff and students for their calm response and their assistance with our investigation."
