"Extensive searches" for a person who was swept into the sea in Cornwall have been called off by the coastguard.

Two other people were washed off rocks at Tubby's Head near St Agnes, on Thursday, but managed to scramble to the shore.

Four lifeboats, three coastguard teams with a helicopter and police carried out searches into the early hours.

"Further shoreline searches" resumed at 08:00 GMT but have now been stood down, the coastguard said.

"Our thoughts are with the family", a spokesperson said.

The three people got into difficulty at about 12:30 on Thursday and Falmouth Coastguard were alerted that they had been swept into the sea.

Coastguard Ivor Thomson said there was a "fairly strong wind" and a "fairly strong swell" when they were called to the search.

"The people that managed to rescue themselves were pretty lucky really - the waves were crashing over the rocks down there at Tubby's Head," he added.

They were later taken into the care of South Western Ambulance Service.
