Three people were injured when part of a balcony fell from a building in Newquay.
Those hurt were taken to hospital, but Devon and Cornwall Police said their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
Emergency crews were called to the scene in Fore Street just before 16:30 BST, the force said.
People were advised to avoid the area and the road was expected to be closed for some time.
"Police were called to reports of falling debris at a property in Fore Street, Newquay at around 16:25 BST," a police spokesperson said.
"Three people were reported to be injured at the scene, but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening or life changing and they are being taken to hospital."
No work was going on at the building, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said, and officers have been working with council officials to assess its safety.
Crew Manager Richard Clemow from Newquay Fire Station said: "The partition of a balcony balustrade has fallen down and struck three members of the public, it's a really unfortunate event."
Mr Clemow added: "We're checking that the building is safe, because obviously this is a busy street through Newquay.
"We've got building control with us, and we're just inspecting the premises."
