Cornish train technician's 'sublime' sunrise shot makes calendar cover

The photo will appear on the cover of the Great Western Railway calendar

A train maintenance technician who photographs sunrises in his spare time has said being the cover star of a rail operator's calendar left him shocked.

Scott Fisher captured a train on the Royal Albert Bridge, which spans the River Tamar near his Saltash home in Cornwall, in February.

He said after posting it online, Great Western Railway asked if it could be used in the firm's 2024 calendar.

However, he said being chosen as the cover shot was "quite a surprise".

The 49-year-old, who sells his photographs online, said he "got into landscape and drone photography about three years ago" and had been taking images of the sun rising, which he does about two or three times a week, when he found the "perfect moment".

"It was a beautiful sunrise, so I had to grab a picture of the high speed train coming over Brunel's iconic bridge," he said.

"The sky was amazing [but] I wasn't expecting to get the train come across."

Mr Fisher said he went out to take photographs of the sun rising about two or three times a week

He said he posted the image on Instagram, which led to the rail operator getting in touch and asking if he wanted to be included in its 2024 calendar.

However, he said he did not realise he would be on the front cover.

"It dropped on the doorstep last week with me on the cover and I didn't know," he said.

"They said it would be featured in the calendar somewhere, but when I saw it on the front cover, it was quite a surprise."

The rail operator said Mr Fisher's photograph had been chosen as it "captured a Castle Class passing serenely over the Royal Albert Bridge" in a "sublime shot".
