Kenilworth railway station funding refused

Plans for a new railway station for a Warwickshire town have hit the buffers after the latest application for funding was turned down.

Kenilworth has not had a station for many years, despite having a line running through it, and some residents have been campaigning for one.

The county council said its latest application for funding had failed.

A spokesman said the scheme remained a priority for the council and it would look at ways of pursuing it.

The council and developers John Laing had worked together on the project since September 2009 and had managed to get planning permission and Network Rail technical approvals for the project.

In October 2010 it was confirmed the Department for Transport Major Scheme Bid funding route was no longer available for new entrants.

In January this year, an application for funding through the new Regional Growth Fund was turned down and the council and developers "reviewed their relationship", a county council spokesman said.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, portfolio holder for environment and economy, said: "We are grateful to John Laing for continuing to support the development of the scheme beyond the original programme to enable us to seek alternative funding for the project.

"The scheme remains a priority for the county council and the people of Kenilworth and we will pursue every opportunity to deliver it."
