TripAdvisor poll ranks Stratford-Upon-Avon sixth in UK

Stratford-Upon-Avon is the sixth most popular place to visit in the UK, according to an online tourism poll.

TripAdvisor asked its users to state where in the world they had visited and whether they liked it or not.

The website received contributions from more than one million people in 2010 to form the Travellers Choice Awards.

London topped the chart with Edinburgh and Bath coming second and third. Stratford-Upon-Avon ranked above 2008 Culture Capital of Europe, Liverpool.

'Fantastic achievement'

Emma O'Boyle, from the website, said that visitors had been attracted by Shakespeare's birthplace, but also by other attractions such as as well as the largest butterfly farm in Europe.

She said: "For Stratford to come in at number six and beat a lot of other famous and larger, obvious tourist destinations is a fantastic achievement.

"It's close to an airport, it's got good road links, relatively easy to reach by rail. That really has helped to secure it in the top 10."
